What side effects can Magic mouthwash cause?
Short answer
Magic mouthwash can cause mouth numbness, irritation, taste changes, dry mouth, or drowsiness. Swallowing it or using too much raises the risk of serious effects. Get emergency help for trouble breathing, seizures, fainting, or blue or gray lips. Tell your physician about bothersome or lasting side effects.
Possible side effects of Magic mouthwash include mouth or throat numbness, burning, irritation, taste changes, dry mouth, and drowsiness. The risk depends on your formula, dose, health, and how you use it. Diphenhydramine may cause sleepiness, especially if the rinse is swallowed. Do not drive if you feel sleepy or dizzy.
Numbness can make swallowing difficult or cause you to bite your cheek or tongue. Avoid eating, drinking, and chewing gum for at least 1 hour after use, and until numbness has worn off. Follow your label if it gives a longer waiting time.
Stop using the rinse and seek emergency help for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, seizures, fainting, an irregular heartbeat, or blue or gray skin or lips. These may be signs of a serious reaction. If someone swallows more than directed or a child drinks the rinse, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 right away. Call 911 for severe symptoms.
