Can Magic mouthwash interact with my other medicines?
Short answer
Yes. Magic mouthwash may interact with other medicines, especially other numbing products and medicines that cause sleepiness. Tell your prescribing physician about all prescriptions, over-the-counter products, supplements, and alcohol use. Do not combine it with another lidocaine or diphenhydramine product unless your physician or pharmacist says it is safe.
Give your prescribing physician and pharmacist a full list of everything you take before starting Magic mouthwash. Include sleep aids, allergy medicines, pain medicines, oral rinses, numbing gels, vitamins, and supplements. Tell them about alcohol and cannabis use as well. Spitting out the rinse does not remove every risk of an interaction.
Other products containing lidocaine or similar numbing medicines can increase the risk of harmful effects. Diphenhydramine is found in many allergy and nighttime products. Combining these products may increase sleepiness or other side effects. Alcohol, opioid pain medicines, and sedatives may add to this risk. Some heart rhythm medicines also need careful review.
Magnesium-aluminum hydroxide can affect how certain medicines are absorbed if swallowed. Ask your pharmacist whether your other medicines need special timing; do not create your own spacing plan. Use the rinse only as prescribed and do not swallow it. Do not stop a regular medicine on your own to make room for this treatment.
