What side effects or discomfort can the Home sleep test cause?

Short answer

The Home sleep test has no medicine-related side effects, but its sensors may cause mild skin irritation, pressure, or discomfort. Wearing the device may also disturb your sleep. Tell your physician about adhesive allergies or sensitive skin before testing, and follow the device instructions if a sensor hurts or causes irritation.

The Home sleep test records signals while you sleep rather than giving you medicine. Possible problems come from wearing the equipment. Depending on the device, these may include skin irritation from tape, discomfort from straps, or pressure from a sensor. Some people find that the equipment interrupts their usual sleep.

Tell your physician before testing if you have adhesive allergies, skin wounds where sensors would go, or trouble wearing similar equipment. Follow the label for fitting each part. Do not tighten straps or clips beyond the instructions to keep them in place. If a sensor causes pain, numbness, swelling, or a rash, stop using that part and contact the care team for guidance.

A home sleep test does not monitor you for emergencies or treat breathing problems. Call 911 for severe trouble breathing, chest pain, or other emergency symptoms. If discomfort prevents you from completing the recording, let your physician know. They can decide whether another testing approach is appropriate.
