Who should not take bupropion?

Short answer

Bupropion should not be used by people with a seizure disorder or a current or past diagnosis of anorexia nervosa or bulimia. Certain medicines and sudden withdrawal from alcohol or sedatives can also make it unsafe. A licensed physician in your state must review your history before deciding whether treatment is appropriate.

Bupropion is not appropriate for people with a seizure disorder or a current or past diagnosis of anorexia nervosa or bulimia. It should not be taken with another medicine that contains bupropion. People with a serious allergy to bupropion should not take it.

Suddenly stopping heavy alcohol use, benzodiazepines, certain sleep medicines, or seizure medicines can raise seizure risk. Tell your physician about these substances before starting treatment. Do not abruptly stop them on your own to become eligible for bupropion.

Bupropion must not be used with certain monoamine oxidase inhibitors, or MAOIs. A waiting period is needed when switching between these medicines. Other medicines, including linezolid and intravenous methylene blue, can also cause serious interactions.

Your physician also needs to know about head injuries, bipolar disorder, high blood pressure, glaucoma, and kidney or liver disease. Share whether you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding. These situations need a careful review, even when they do not automatically rule out treatment. A licensed physician in your state makes the final treatment decision.
