Does bupropion cause weight gain or weight loss?

Bupropion is generally less likely than many SSRIs to cause weight gain, and some people lose weight while taking it. Results vary. Weight gain can still occur. Bupropion alone is not FDA-approved for weight management, and your physician should review any large or unexpected change in weight or appetite.

Results vary. Your weight can also change as depression symptoms, eating habits, sleep, and activity levels change.
Bupropion alone is not FDA-approved for weight management. A separate prescription medicine combines bupropion with naltrexone for certain adults with weight-related health needs. That combination has its own dosing and safety rules. Do not add naltrexone or change your bupropion dose to try to lose weight.
Tell your physician about unexpected weight changes, ongoing nausea, or trouble eating enough. They can review whether the medicine, another condition, or another treatment may be involved. Avoid choosing an antidepressant based only on a hoped-for weight effect.
Be open about any current or past eating disorder. Bupropion should not be used by people with a current or prior diagnosis of anorexia nervosa or bulimia because of seizure risk.
