Which medicines, supplements, or drinks can interact with sertraline?

Short answer

Sertraline can interact with other antidepressants, certain pain and migraine medicines, blood thinners, and supplements such as St. John's wort. Some combinations can be dangerous. Avoid alcohol, and give your physician and pharmacist a full list of everything you take before starting sertraline or adding another product.

Sertraline has important drug interactions. It must not be combined with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). Required waiting periods apply when switching between these medicines. Some medicines, including linezolid and certain uses of methylene blue, also have MAOI effects. Pimozide is another medicine that must not be taken with sertraline.

Other products that affect serotonin can raise the risk of serotonin syndrome. These include some antidepressants, tramadol, triptan migraine medicines, lithium, St. John's wort, and cough products containing dextromethorphan. Not every combination is forbidden, but a physician must review the risks.

Aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, blood thinners, and some other medicines can increase bleeding risk when taken with sertraline. Do not stop a prescribed blood thinner on your own. Ask before adding an over-the-counter pain reliever.

Avoid alcohol because it can worsen side effects and impair judgment. Share all prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, supplements, and substance use with your physician and pharmacist. Get urgent help for agitation or confusion with fever, sweating, tremor, or stiff muscles.
