How should I take sertraline, and what if I miss a dose?

Short answer

Take sertraline exactly as prescribed, usually once daily at a consistent time. Your physician chooses the dose and any changes. If you miss a dose, take it when remembered unless it is almost time for the next one. Skip it then, and never double doses to catch up.

Sertraline is usually taken once a day, in the morning or evening, with or without food. Follow your prescription label because schedules can differ for certain conditions. Your physician may start with a lower dose and adjust it gradually. Do not change your dose based on another person's prescription.

If you forget a dose, take it when you remember unless it is almost time for your next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and return to your usual schedule. Do not take two doses together to make up for one. Ask your pharmacist if you are unsure about timing.

Some liquid forms require dilution before use. Follow the exact product directions and use the supplied measuring device. Do not use a kitchen spoon or assume all liquid products have the same instructions.

If the medicine affects your sleep or makes you sleepy, ask your physician whether changing the time of day makes sense. Keep it safely stored away from children, and never share your prescription.
