Which medicines or substances can interact with Bupropion XL 150 mg?
Short answer
Bupropion XL can interact with other antidepressants, medicines that raise seizure risk, and products containing bupropion. Some combinations must be avoided, including certain MAO inhibitors. Give your physician a full list of medicines, supplements, alcohol use, and other substances before starting. Do not stop alcohol or sedatives abruptly without medical advice.
Before starting Bupropion XL, tell your physician and pharmacist about every prescription medicine, over-the-counter product, vitamin, and supplement you use. Include nicotine patches, sleep aids, and any other product containing bupropion. Taking more than one bupropion product can raise seizure risk.
Bupropion must not be combined with certain monoamine oxidase inhibitors, also called MAO inhibitors. A waiting period is generally needed when switching between these medicines. The antibiotic linezolid and intravenous methylene blue also need special review. Your physician must set any waiting period or switching plan.
Other antidepressants, antipsychotics, steroids, and some medicines for pain or other conditions may interact with bupropion or increase seizure risk. Bupropion can also change the levels of certain medicines in your body. Your physician may need to choose another treatment or adjust your plan.
Discuss alcohol, cannabis, and other substance use honestly. Avoid or limit alcohol as your physician directs. Suddenly stopping heavy alcohol use, benzodiazepines, or certain seizure medicines can be dangerous. Seek medical advice before making those changes.
