When does acne need an in-person exam instead of online treatment?

Short answer

Acne may need an in-person exam if you have deep, painful lumps, scarring, a sudden severe breakout, or an unclear diagnosis. Online treatment is not right for every case. A licensed physician in your state can review your symptoms and advise whether you need a dermatologist or other local care.

An online visit can help a physician review your history and visible skin concerns, but it cannot replace every part of an in-person exam. Deep, painful nodules, cyst-like lumps, or new scars are reasons to seek a more detailed assessment. Widespread acne on the chest or back may also need a different approach from a simple facial topical routine.

Some conditions look like acne but need different treatment. These include certain rashes and infections around hair follicles. Tell your physician if bumps itch strongly, appeared suddenly, or started after a new medicine. Clear photos can be useful, but the physician may still recommend a local exam.

Seek prompt medical care for fever with rapidly spreading redness, marked swelling, or severe pain rather than assuming these symptoms are ordinary acne. Also tell your physician if acne is affecting your mood, sleep, or daily life. The treatment decision should consider both your skin findings and how the condition affects you.
