How long does prescription acne treatment take to show results?
Short answer
Prescription acne treatment usually takes weeks rather than days to show changes, and fuller improvement may take several months. Results vary. Tretinoin can also cause early irritation or an initial increase in breakouts. Follow your prescribed schedule, and contact your physician if symptoms are severe or your skin is getting worse.
Acne treatment works gradually. Existing clogged pores take time to change, and new spots may still appear early in treatment. With topical tretinoin, visible improvement often takes several weeks, while fuller benefit may take a few months. Results vary. Your physician can explain what timeline is reasonable for your specific prescription.
Some people notice more breakouts at first. Others develop dryness, redness, or peeling. These changes should not automatically be treated as a sign that the medicine is working. Severe burning, marked swelling, or painful skin needs medical advice rather than simply pushing through treatment.
Use the medicine only as directed. Applying extra or using it more often will not reliably speed up progress and can increase irritation. Keep your routine simple, and avoid adding several new products at once. If helpful, take photos in similar lighting to discuss at follow-up. Contact your physician if your acne keeps worsening, leaves scars, or has not changed within the review period they recommend.
