Is enclomiphene FDA-approved for low testosterone?
Short answer
No. Enclomiphene is not FDA-approved for low testosterone or any other use. Calling it off-label can be misleading because that term usually describes an approved drug used for an unapproved purpose. Compounded medications are prepared by a licensed pharmacy for one patient and are not FDA-approved.
Enclomiphene is not FDA-approved for any use. This is different from a drug that has FDA approval but is prescribed for another condition. That second situation is usually called off-label use. Describing enclomiphene only as off-label leaves out an important part of its regulatory status.
If enclomiphene is prescribed as a compounded medication, it is prepared by a licensed pharmacy for one patient. Compounded medications are not FDA-approved. The FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness, and quality before they are marketed. Compounding also has specific legal requirements that the prescriber and pharmacy must follow.
A prescription does not mean that the FDA has approved the medication. Your physician should explain why it is being considered, what is known, and where evidence is limited. It is reasonable to ask about approved options and their risks as well.
A licensed physician in your state decides whether treatment is appropriate after reviewing your health history, symptoms, and lab results. You can ask questions before choosing whether to proceed.
