How should I take bupropion, and what if I miss a dose?
Short answer
Take bupropion exactly as prescribed because the schedule depends on its release form. Do not crush, chew, or split sustained-release or extended-release tablets. If you miss a dose, skip it and take the next dose at the usual time. Never double a dose, since extra bupropion increases seizure risk.
Bupropion comes in immediate-release, sustained-release, and extended-release forms. These forms have different dosing schedules and spacing rules. Follow your prescription label rather than directions from another person or an older prescription. Your physician may start with a lower dose and increase it gradually to limit seizure risk.
Swallow sustained-release and extended-release tablets whole. Do not crush, chew, or split them. Changing the tablet can release too much medicine at once. If you have trouble swallowing tablets, ask your pharmacist or physician about options instead of altering them yourself.
Bupropion can be taken with or without food. Ask your physician about dose timing if it disrupts your sleep. Do not move doses closer together on your own. The safe interval depends on the form you take.
If you miss a dose, skip it and take the next dose at its scheduled time. Never take extra medicine to catch up. If you take too much, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 right away. Call 911 for a seizure, collapse, or trouble breathing.
