How long does the Insomnia program take to help with sleep?
Short answer
The Insomnia program does not have one set timeline. CBT-I skills usually take practice over several weeks, while prescribed doxepin may affect sleep sooner. Results vary. Doxepin mainly helps with staying asleep. Track your sleep and discuss ongoing symptoms with your physician rather than increasing medicine on your own.
CBT-I works on sleep habits and thoughts through repeated practice. Changes may build over several weeks rather than after one lesson. Results vary. Use the weekly lessons as directed and keep a sleep record if your care plan asks for one. Include bedtime, wake time, nighttime waking, and how alert you feel during the day.
If prescribed, low-dose doxepin may affect sleep from the first doses, but it does not work equally well for everyone. Results vary. It is used mainly for trouble staying asleep, not as a solution for every type of sleep problem. Follow your prescribing physician and label rather than taking more if you do not notice a change.
Tell your physician if sleep does not improve within seven to ten days of starting doxepin, or if it gets worse. Ongoing insomnia may need another review for causes such as sleep apnea, pain, mood symptoms, or other medicines. Seek guidance sooner for serious side effects or unsafe daytime sleepiness.
