What should I do if I miss a medication dose or lesson in the Insomnia program?
Short answer
If you miss doxepin in the Insomnia program, follow your prescribing physician’s instructions and pharmacy label. Do not double a dose or take it when you cannot get a full night of sleep. If you miss a CBT-I lesson, resume the lessons and ask for guidance if needed.
A missed dose does not mean you should take extra medicine later. Follow the missed-dose instructions from your prescribing physician and pharmacy label. If you remember doxepin late at night or near your wake time, do not take it unless you can still follow all label directions, including allowing a full night of sleep. Ask your pharmacist if you are unsure.
Never take two doses together to make up for one you missed. Do not add an over-the-counter sleep aid or another sedating medicine as a substitute without checking with your physician. Combining sleep medicines can increase drowsiness and other safety risks. Avoid driving if you feel sleepy, whether from medicine or lack of sleep.
If you miss a weekly CBT-I lesson, return to the lesson schedule rather than trying to make up for it through extreme changes to your sleep routine. Tell your physician if missed doses or lessons are happening often so you can discuss a practical plan.
