Sleep · FAQ
How do I use the Insomnia program’s weekly lessons and prescribed medicine?
Short answer
Complete the Insomnia program’s weekly CBT-I lessons and follow the sleep plan you are given. Take medication only if prescribed, exactly as your prescribing physician and label direct. Low-dose doxepin is generally taken near bedtime, with enough time for a full night of sleep. Avoid alcohol.
Use the weekly CBT-I lessons to learn and practice skills for sleep. These may include keeping a steady wake time and changing habits or thoughts that interfere with sleep. Follow the program’s instructions rather than making large changes to your time in bed on your own. Tell your physician if daytime sleepiness makes driving or work unsafe.
If doxepin is prescribed, your prescribing physician and pharmacy label guide its use. Low-dose doxepin for insomnia is generally taken within 30 minutes before bedtime and not within three hours of a meal. You should have time for a full night of sleep, usually seven to eight hours. Confirm the directions for your specific prescription.
Do not drink alcohol while taking doxepin. Do not drive or use machinery after taking it, or the next day if you are still sleepy. Never take an extra dose during the night unless your physician specifically directs you to do so.
