Can I use prescription acne treatment while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Short answer

Some prescription acne medicines should not be used during pregnancy, and breastfeeding also requires an ingredient review. Topical retinoids such as tretinoin are generally avoided during pregnancy. Tell your physician if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding before starting treatment. A licensed physician in your state will review appropriate options.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding can change which acne treatments are appropriate. Do not assume a medicine is safe just because it goes on the skin. The active ingredients, amount used, treatment area, and your health history all matter. Combination prescriptions need a review of every ingredient.

Topical retinoids such as tretinoin are generally avoided during pregnancy. Oral isotretinoin is a different medicine that can cause severe birth defects and requires strict safety steps. If you become pregnant while using tretinoin, stop using it and contact your prescribing physician and pregnancy care clinician. An accidental exposure does not by itself tell you whether harm has occurred; your clinicians can review the situation.

During breastfeeding, ask your physician before starting or restarting any acne medicine. Do not apply a topical medicine where your baby's mouth or skin could contact it. A licensed physician in your state can discuss options based on your needs and coordinate with your pregnancy or breastfeeding care team when needed.
