Sleep · FAQ
Can I switch from another sleep treatment to the Insomnia program?
Short answer
You may be able to switch to the Insomnia program after a licensed physician in your state reviews your current treatment. Do not stop, overlap, or replace sleep medicines yourself. Some medicines need a gradual taper or a waiting period. Share your exact doses and when you last took them.
A switch starts with a review of your current treatment and why you want to change it. Tell the physician about prescription sleep medicines, over-the-counter products, melatonin, cannabis, and alcohol. Include each dose, how often you use it, how long you have used it, and any side effects. Mention any past trouble stopping a medicine.
Some sleep medicines, including benzodiazepines, can cause serious withdrawal if stopped suddenly. Others may add to doxepin’s sedating effects if taken together. Your physician decides whether you need a taper, a waiting period, or another approach. Do not overlap treatments or use leftover medicine unless your physician specifically directs you to do so.
Weekly CBT-I lessons may be part of the plan during a medication change. Your physician can help decide how to fit them into your care. Starting the Insomnia program does not guarantee a prescription or a better outcome. Results vary. Follow your prescribing physician and the new pharmacy label, not the directions from your previous treatment.
