Who should avoid dutasteride, and what are the pregnancy precautions?
Short answer
Dutasteride must not be used during pregnancy because it can harm the development of a male fetus. People who are pregnant or may become pregnant should avoid contact with it. Tell your physician about pregnancy plans, breastfeeding, liver disease, and drug allergies before considering a topical dutasteride prescription.
Dutasteride can harm the development of a male fetus and must not be used during pregnancy. It can be absorbed through skin. People who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not handle the topical medication or contact wet treated areas. If skin contact occurs, wash the area with soap and water and seek medical advice.
Tell your physician if you are breastfeeding or planning a pregnancy. Do not assume a scalp product is safe because it is not swallowed. Ask your prescriber and pharmacy how to avoid transfer through hands, spills, or shared items. Keep the medication securely away from children and never share your prescription.
Also report any liver disease or allergy to dutasteride, finasteride, minoxidil, or other ingredients. Certain health conditions may require another treatment or added review. A licensed physician in your state decides if treatment is appropriate. Sudden, patchy, painful, or unexplained hair loss may need an in-person exam before a prescription is considered.
