Why does Verra combine topical dutasteride with minoxidil?
Short answer
Dutasteride and minoxidil target different parts of the hair loss process. Dutasteride reduces DHT production, while minoxidil can support hair growth. Results vary, and the combination is not guaranteed to outperform other options. Verra's compounded topical is prepared by a licensed pharmacy for one patient and is not FDA-approved.
Dutasteride and minoxidil act in different ways. Dutasteride blocks the enzyme that makes DHT, a hormone involved in pattern hair loss. Minoxidil does not block DHT. It can help support hair growth, though its exact action is not fully understood. Results vary, and combining the ingredients does not guarantee more regrowth.
Some topical minoxidil products are FDA-approved for certain forms of pattern hair loss. That approval does not extend to a compounded combination with dutasteride. Verra's compounded medications are prepared by a licensed pharmacy for one patient and are not FDA-approved. Evidence for the exact combination may be limited, and different formulas may have different absorption and side effect risks.
A licensed physician in your state decides whether the combination is appropriate for you. Tell them if you already use minoxidil, finasteride, dutasteride, or another scalp treatment. Do not add extra hair growth products without advice. Using more than prescribed may increase exposure and irritation without providing additional benefit.
