Is dutasteride FDA-approved for hair loss?
Short answer
Oral dutasteride is FDA-approved for an enlarged prostate, not hair loss. Prescribing it for hair loss is an off-label use. Verra offers a compounded topical with minoxidil. Compounded medications are prepared by a licensed pharmacy for one patient and are not FDA-approved. A physician decides whether treatment is appropriate.
Oral dutasteride is FDA-approved to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia, which means an enlarged prostate. It is not FDA-approved to treat hair loss. When a physician prescribes an approved drug for a use outside its approved label, that is called off-label prescribing. Off-label use requires a careful review of the possible risks and benefits.
Verra offers dutasteride in a compounded topical with minoxidil. Compounded medications are prepared by a licensed pharmacy for one patient and are not FDA-approved. The FDA does not review each compounded product for safety, effectiveness, or quality before it is marketed. An ingredient's approval for another use does not mean the compounded formula is approved.
A licensed physician in your state decides whether this treatment is appropriate after reviewing your health history and hair loss concerns. Ask about the evidence for your exact formula, its risks, and approved alternatives. No hair loss treatment can promise regrowth. Results vary, including with off-label and compounded treatments.
