Who needs extra medical review before taking sildenafil?
Short answer
Sildenafil is not appropriate for everyone. A licensed physician in your state must review your health and medicines. Tell them about heart disease, low blood pressure, recent stroke or heart attack, kidney or liver problems, eye conditions, or past prolonged erections. Nitrates and riociguat must not be combined with sildenafil.
A licensed physician in your state decides whether sildenafil is appropriate after reviewing your medical history. An online request does not guarantee a prescription. Some health conditions require more information, an exam, or care from your regular medical team before treatment can be considered.
Tell the physician about heart disease, chest pain, irregular heartbeats, low blood pressure, or poorly controlled high blood pressure. Mention any recent stroke or heart attack. Sexual activity puts extra demand on the heart, so it is important to share whether a clinician has advised you to avoid sex.
Also report kidney or liver disease, bleeding problems, stomach ulcers, eye disease, and any sudden vision loss in the past. Tell the physician about a curved penis, past prolonged erections, sickle cell disease, leukemia, or multiple myeloma. These details can affect the safety review.
Provide a complete medicine list. Sildenafil must not be used with nitrates or riociguat. Do not stop an existing medicine to qualify for sildenafil without guidance from the clinician who manages it.
