When should I take sildenafil before sex?

Short answer

Sildenafil is usually taken as needed about one hour before sex. For standard oral tablets, the usual timing range is 30 minutes to four hours before sex. Follow your prescription instructions. Results vary. Sexual stimulation is needed, and you should not take extra doses to make it work faster.

For ED, sildenafil is usually taken about one hour before sexual activity. Standard oral tablets may be taken from 30 minutes to four hours before sex. Your own prescription instructions come first, especially if you receive a compounded product with a different form or directions.

Sildenafil does not cause an erection as soon as you swallow it. Sexual arousal is needed. The time it takes to notice an effect can differ based on food, your health, and other medicines. Results vary. A high-fat meal can delay the effect of standard oral sildenafil tablets.

Do not take another dose simply because you have not noticed an effect yet. For ED, sildenafil should generally not be taken more than once in 24 hours. Some people need a longer gap because of other medicines or health conditions.

If your timing does not seem to work well, ask your prescriber for advice. Do not change the dose or try a different way of taking it on your own. An erection lasting more than four hours needs emergency care.
