Sleep · FAQ
What side effects can happen with sleep devices or insomnia medication?
Short answer
Side effects depend on your sleep treatment. Auto-CPAP can cause dryness or mask irritation. Oral appliances can cause jaw discomfort or bite changes. Some insomnia medicines cause dizziness or next-day sleepiness. Tell your clinician about new symptoms, and seek urgent help for breathing trouble, severe allergic symptoms, or dangerous sleep behaviors.
Each sleep option has different risks. A home sleep test can cause minor discomfort or skin irritation from sensors. Auto-CPAP may cause a dry nose or mouth, congestion, skin irritation, or a bloated feeling. Ask your care team about comfort concerns rather than changing prescribed pressure settings on your own.
Oral appliances can cause extra saliva, dry mouth, sore teeth, or jaw pain. Over time, they may change your bite. Dental follow-up is important even if the device feels comfortable. Report pain, loose teeth, or a change in how your teeth meet.
Insomnia medication risks depend on the specific drug. They can include dizziness, falls, next-day impairment, and interactions with alcohol or other medicines. Certain sleep medicines can cause activities such as sleepwalking or sleep-driving while not fully awake. Seek prompt medical help if this occurs, and get instructions before taking another dose. Call 911 for severe breathing trouble or a severe allergic reaction. Do not drive if you feel impaired.
