What medicines or supplements can interact with valacyclovir for Genital herpes?
Short answer
Have your physician or pharmacist check all medicines and supplements before you start valacyclovir. Medicines that affect the kidneys may need extra review, including some pain relievers and transplant medicines. Do not combine valacyclovir with another herpes antiviral unless your physician directs you to do so.
Give your prescribing physician a full list of prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Include medicines you take only once in a while. A pharmacist can also check your list for interactions before you start treatment or add a new product.
Valacyclovir needs extra care when used with medicines that can affect kidney function. Examples include some transplant medicines and pain relievers such as ibuprofen or naproxen, especially when you are dehydrated or have kidney disease. These combinations are not always off-limits, but your clinician should decide whether they are safe for you. Mention cimetidine and probenecid as well.
Do not combine valacyclovir with acyclovir or another herpes antiviral unless your physician gives clear instructions. Tell your clinician if you have recently had or plan to receive a live chickenpox vaccine, since antiviral timing can matter. Do not stop a needed medicine on your own. Ask your physician or pharmacist to review the safest plan for your situation.
