How do I use valacyclovir 500 mg for suppressive or episodic Genital herpes treatment?
Short answer
Take valacyclovir by mouth, with or without food, following your physician’s directions and pharmacy label. For daily suppression, use a regular schedule. For outbreaks, follow the prescribed start time and course. Do not assume the daily suppression directions also apply to an outbreak or take extra tablets without guidance.
Take your tablet by mouth as directed on the pharmacy label. Valacyclovir can be taken with or without food. If it upsets your stomach, taking it with food may help. Results vary. Drink enough fluids unless a clinician has told you to limit fluids because of a health condition.
For suppressive treatment, take the medicine on the schedule your physician provides. A phone reminder may help you remember each dose. For episodic treatment, your physician may tell you to start when early signs, such as tingling or burning, begin. Ask for clear instructions about when to start, how often to take it, and when to finish.
Do not take extra tablets to try to clear an outbreak faster. Results vary. Treatment does not cure herpes or remove all risk of passing it to a partner. Avoid sexual contact during sores or warning symptoms. Condoms lower, but do not remove, transmission risk. Contact your prescribing team if you cannot follow the label or have trouble swallowing tablets.
