What is tadalafil, and how does it treat erectile dysfunction?
Short answer
Tadalafil is a prescription medicine that helps increase blood flow to the penis during sexual arousal. It belongs to a group called PDE5 inhibitors and is the active ingredient in Cialis. It does not cause an automatic erection or increase sexual desire. Results vary.
Tadalafil treats erectile dysfunction, or ED. ED means having trouble getting or keeping an erection firm enough for sex. Tadalafil blocks an enzyme called PDE5. This helps blood vessels in the penis relax during sexual arousal, allowing more blood to enter. Results vary.
Sexual stimulation is still needed. Tadalafil does not increase sexual desire, prevent pregnancy, or protect against sexually transmitted infections. It also does not cure the underlying cause of ED. Stress, diabetes, blood vessel disease, some medicines, and other health conditions can play a role.
A licensed physician in your state decides whether tadalafil is appropriate based on your health history and current medicines. They may recommend a low daily dose or a dose taken as needed. Never combine tadalafil with nitrates or recreational nitrites, sometimes called poppers, because blood pressure can fall dangerously low.
If a compounded version is prescribed, compounded medications are prepared by a licensed pharmacy for one patient and are not FDA-approved.
