What happens if I stop topical or oral finasteride?

Short answer

Finasteride generally needs continued use to maintain its hair benefits. After stopping, hair loss can resume and treatment-related growth may be lost over time. Results vary. The timing is less certain for compounded topical formulas. Ask your prescriber about stopping, especially if side effects are the reason.

Finasteride does not permanently remove the cause of male pattern hair loss. Its effect on DHT depends on continued treatment. After stopping oral finasteride, treatment-related hair growth is generally lost within about a year. Results vary. Your underlying hair loss can continue as the medicine's effect wears off.

There is less clear information about stopping each compounded topical formula. If your product also contains minoxidil, stopping it removes both medicines at once. That can make later changes harder to interpret. Compounded medications are prepared by a licensed pharmacy for one patient and are not FDA-approved. Do not assume a topical formula will provide lasting benefits after you stop.

Discuss your reason for stopping with your prescriber. They can review side effects, other treatment options, and whether your diagnosis needs another look. Seek prompt advice for new sexual symptoms, breast changes, or mood changes, including symptoms that continue after stopping. If you are in emotional crisis or have thoughts of self-harm, call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
