Who may be eligible for topical versus oral finasteride?
Short answer
Finasteride is mainly considered for male pattern hair loss, not every cause of shedding. A physician licensed in your state decides whether topical or oral treatment is appropriate. Pregnancy risk, medical history, scalp health, and other medicines matter. Topical use does not remove finasteride's pregnancy risks.
A diagnosis should come before choosing a form of finasteride. Gradual thinning at the crown or a receding hairline may fit male pattern hair loss. Sudden shedding, round bald patches, scalp pain, or scarring may point to another cause. Those signs may call for an in-person exam or further testing.
Oral finasteride is FDA-approved for male pattern hair loss in men. It is not approved for women or children. Topical finasteride is not FDA-approved in the United States. Compounded medications are prepared by a licensed pharmacy for one patient and are not FDA-approved. A topical prescription is not automatically suitable for someone who cannot take the pill.
Finasteride can harm the development of a male fetus. Anyone who is pregnant or may become pregnant should not use it or handle crushed or broken tablets. Avoid exposure to topical finasteride as well. Tell your physician about pregnancy plans in your household, fertility concerns, liver problems, mood symptoms, and all medicines you use. A physician licensed in your state makes the treatment decision.
