Does topical finasteride have fewer whole-body side effects than oral finasteride?
Short answer
Topical finasteride may produce less whole-body exposure with some formulas, but it can still enter the bloodstream and cause side effects. It is not risk-free or proven safer in every compounded form. A physician should review your risks before choosing between topical and oral finasteride.
Applying finasteride to the scalp does not keep all of it in the scalp. Some topical formulas may lead to lower blood levels than oral treatment, but absorption depends on the strength, dose, formula, and how it is used. Lower exposure does not guarantee fewer side effects. Results vary.
Possible whole-body effects include changes in sexual desire, erections, or ejaculation. Mood changes have also been reported with finasteride. Some people report symptoms that continue after stopping. Topical treatment can also cause scalp irritation. Contact your prescriber about new or troubling symptoms rather than assuming a topical product cannot be responsible.
A physician licensed in your state should review your medical history, current medicines, and past reactions. Compounded medications are prepared by a licensed pharmacy for one patient and are not FDA-approved. Do not use extra topical medicine or apply it to broken skin unless directed. Seek emergency care for trouble breathing or swelling of the face or throat. If you are in emotional crisis, call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
