How soon might low-dose doxepin help my sleep?
Short answer
Some people may notice a change in sleep during the first few nights of low-dose doxepin. Results vary. Contact your physician if your sleep is not improving within seven to ten days, or if it gets worse. Do not raise your dose or add another sleep medicine yourself.
Low-dose doxepin acts on wakefulness signals after a dose, so you may notice a sleep change early in treatment. Results vary. It does not need to build up for weeks in the way some medicines used for depression do. Still, one night's sleep is not enough to judge your overall sleep pattern.
Keep a simple sleep record if your physician recommends it. Note when you take your dose, your bedtime, nighttime awakenings, and how alert you feel the next day. Include alcohol use, naps, and changes in your schedule. This information can help guide follow-up care.
Contact your physician if insomnia does not improve within seven to ten days or gets worse. Ongoing insomnia can be a sign of another sleep disorder, a medical issue, or a mental health concern that needs attention.
Do not take more doxepin to chase a better night's sleep. Ask your physician about next steps and whether CBT-I or an evaluation for another cause is appropriate.
