How should I take low-dose doxepin for insomnia?
Short answer
Take doxepin exactly as prescribed, usually within 30 minutes before bed. For FDA-approved insomnia tablets, instructions say not to take it within three hours of a meal. Only take it when you can stay in bed for seven to eight hours. Never take an extra dose during the night.
Follow the directions on your own prescription label. FDA-approved doxepin tablets for insomnia come in 3 mg and 6 mg strengths. Your physician chooses your dose based on factors such as age, liver health, and other medicines. Do not increase the dose on your own.
For these insomnia tablets, take the prescribed dose within 30 minutes before bedtime. Do not take it within three hours of a meal. Food can delay its effect and increase exposure to the medicine, which may raise the risk of next-day drowsiness.
Plan for seven to eight hours in bed after taking it. Finish activities that require alertness before your dose. Do not use alcohol or take an extra dose if you wake up later that night.
If your prescription is compounded, check its specific directions with your pharmacist. Compounded medications are prepared by a licensed pharmacy for one patient and are not FDA-approved. Never assume that different doxepin formulations have identical dosing instructions.
