How does low-dose doxepin help with staying asleep?
Short answer
At sleep doses, doxepin mainly blocks histamine signals that help keep your brain awake. This may make nighttime awakenings less disruptive. Results vary. Its effect at these doses is different from its use at higher doses for depression, and a sleep dose does not treat depression.
Histamine is one of the chemical messengers involved in keeping you awake. At low doses, doxepin mainly blocks a type of histamine receptor called H1. This can support sleep during the night. Results vary.
Although doxepin belongs to a group called tricyclic antidepressants, the doses used for insomnia are much lower than those typically used for depression. You should not expect a low sleep dose to treat depression or another mental health condition. Tell your physician if you also have mood symptoms.
Doxepin does not address every possible cause of poor sleep. Nighttime pain, breathing problems, restless legs, alcohol, and other medicines may also interrupt sleep. Your physician may ask about these issues before recommending treatment.
Do not combine doxepin with an over-the-counter antihistamine sleep aid unless your physician approves. Blocking histamine with more than one medicine can add to drowsiness and other side effects. Share all prescription drugs, supplements, and nonprescription products with your care team.
