How should I take spironolactone, and what if I miss a dose?
Short answer
Take spironolactone exactly as prescribed, at a consistent time and consistently with or without food. Your dose depends on your condition and health history. If you miss a dose, take it when remembered unless it is almost time for the next dose. Never double doses.
Your physician sets your spironolactone dose based on why you need it, your health history, and other medicines. Follow the prescription label rather than a dose listed online or used by someone else. Your clinician may adjust the dose after reviewing side effects, blood pressure, or lab results.
Take it consistently with or without food, following any specific directions on your label. Because it can increase urination, ask your pharmacist about timing if it disrupts sleep. If your prescription has more than one daily dose, do not combine doses without checking first. Use the supplied measuring device if you receive a liquid medicine, not a kitchen spoon.
If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless it is almost time for the next one. In that case, skip it and return to your usual schedule. Never take a double dose. Ask your pharmacist if you are unsure what to do. Contact your clinician if vomiting, diarrhea, or poor fluid intake makes it hard to take the medicine safely.
