How should I apply topical minoxidil safely?

Short answer

Apply topical minoxidil to the scalp exactly as your product label or physician directs. Use it on dry, intact skin, not just on the hair. Wash your hands afterward and let it dry before contact with pillows or other people. Using extra can increase side effects without speeding results. Results vary.

Check the instructions for your exact minoxidil product. The amount and frequency can differ by strength and form. Apply the directed amount to the affected area of dry scalp, rather than coating the hair. Do not use more often or over a larger area than directed.

Avoid the eyes, mouth, and broken or irritated skin. Wash your hands after applying it. Let the medicine dry fully before lying down, wearing a head covering, or allowing skin contact with another person. Follow the label’s directions about how long to wait before washing your scalp.

Some topical products contain alcohol and are flammable. Keep them away from flames, heat, and smoking during use and while the product is drying. Store all minoxidil products out of reach of children and pets. Minoxidil can be highly toxic to pets, especially cats; contact a veterinarian right away after a possible exposure.

If you miss an application, follow your product’s missed-dose instructions. Do not double the next application. Ask your pharmacist if any directions are unclear.
