Is increased shedding normal when starting minoxidil?
Short answer
Some people notice increased shedding during the first weeks of minoxidil use. This can happen as follicles shift through the hair growth cycle and is often temporary. Results vary. Shedding does not prove that treatment is working. Contact your physician if it is severe, lasts longer than expected, or causes concern.
Increased shedding can happen early in minoxidil treatment as hair follicles move through the growth cycle. Some existing hairs may shed before new growth becomes visible. This early shedding is often temporary. Results vary. Not everyone has it, and having it does not guarantee future hair growth.
It can be hard to tell treatment-related shedding from another cause of hair loss. Tell your physician when the shedding began, how much it has changed, and whether you have other symptoms. Mention recent illness, major stress, weight changes, or new medicines as well.
Contact your physician if shedding is heavy, continues beyond the expected early period, or appears in patches. Scalp redness, pain, crusting, or sores also need review. Do not assume every new symptom is a normal part of treatment.
Follow your prescribed plan unless your physician advises a change or you develop symptoms that require urgent care. Do not increase the dose to replace shed hair or add other scalp treatments without checking first.
