How does minoxidil work for hair loss?
Short answer
Minoxidil helps hair follicles stay in the growing phase longer. It may help some people with pattern hair loss grow thicker hair or slow further thinning. Results vary. It comes as a topical treatment and an oral tablet. A licensed physician in your state decides whether treatment is appropriate.
Minoxidil acts on hair follicles and helps extend the active growth phase. Its exact role in hair growth is not fully understood. It may help slow thinning and support thicker hair in people with pattern hair loss. Results vary. It does not cure the underlying cause of hair loss.
Topical minoxidil is applied to the scalp. Oral minoxidil is a tablet that acts throughout the body. Oral minoxidil is approved to treat high blood pressure, but its use for hair loss is off-label. This means the FDA has not approved the tablet for that purpose.
The cause of your hair loss matters. Sudden shedding, bald patches, scalp pain, or scarring may need a different evaluation rather than minoxidil alone. A licensed physician in your state reviews your symptoms, health history, and medications before deciding if treatment is appropriate.
If a compounded form is prescribed, compounded medications are prepared by a licensed pharmacy for one patient and are not FDA-approved.
