How do compounded and brand-name medicines differ in sleep care?

Short answer

Compounded sleep medications are prepared by a licensed pharmacy for one patient and are not FDA-approved. FDA-approved brand-name medicines go through FDA review for their approved uses. Compounded options have not undergone that same review. Your physician decides whether medication is appropriate and discusses the risks and available options.

Compounding means a licensed pharmacy prepares a medication for one patient. A physician may consider it when an available FDA-approved product does not meet a patient's medical needs, such as when a different formulation is needed. Compounded medications are not FDA-approved. The FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness, or quality before they are marketed.

Brand-name prescription medicines that are FDA-approved have undergone FDA review for specific uses. Both approved and compounded medicines can have side effects and interactions. A compounded option should not be assumed to work better or carry fewer risks. Results vary. Ask why a particular formulation is being recommended for you.

This distinction applies to medication, not to a home sleep test, oral appliance, or Auto-CPAP device. If the Insomnia program includes medication, confirm its ingredients, directions, storage needs, and pharmacy information. A licensed physician in your state decides whether a prescription is appropriate. Do not switch products or doses without that physician's guidance.
