Can topical dutasteride cause sexual side effects or affect fertility?

Short answer

Oral dutasteride can cause lower sex drive, erection problems, and changes in ejaculation or semen. Topical dutasteride may also enter the bloodstream, so these risks cannot be ruled out. The risk for a specific compounded formula is uncertain. Tell your physician about fertility plans and any new sexual symptoms.

Oral dutasteride has known sexual side effects. These include lower sex drive, trouble getting or keeping an erection, and changes in ejaculation. It can also affect semen measures, such as sperm count and movement. What those changes mean for an individual's ability to conceive is uncertain and needs a personal medical review.

A topical formula may still allow dutasteride to enter the bloodstream. It should not be presented as having no sexual or fertility risks. The amount absorbed and the risk of side effects are not established for every compounded formula. Reports with oral dutasteride include sexual symptoms that continued after stopping, though dutasteride's role in that persistence is uncertain.

Before treatment, tell your physician if you are trying to conceive, have fertility concerns, or already have sexual symptoms. If new symptoms appear, contact your prescriber rather than changing the dose yourself. They can review other possible causes and discuss whether to pause, stop, or change your treatment.
