Can tirzepatide interact with other medicines or birth control pills?
Short answer
Yes. Tirzepatide slows stomach emptying, which can affect oral medicines. It can also raise the risk of low blood sugar when used with insulin or certain diabetes medicines. Birth control pills may be less effective. Tell your physician about every medicine and supplement you use before starting treatment.
Tirzepatide slows how quickly food and medicines leave your stomach. This may affect how some oral medicines are absorbed. Give your physician a full list of prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and supplements. Some medicines may need closer monitoring.
Oral hormonal birth control may be less effective with tirzepatide. Use a non-oral birth control method or add a barrier method, such as condoms, for four weeks after starting tirzepatide and for four weeks after each dose increase. Discuss your options with your clinician.
Insulin and medicines such as sulfonylureas can increase the risk of low blood sugar when taken with tirzepatide. Your physician may need to adjust those medicines. Do not change them yourself. Ask about glucose checks and what to do if you become shaky, sweaty, dizzy, or confused.
Do not combine tirzepatide with another tirzepatide product or a GLP-1 medicine without a specific medical review. Also tell your surgical or anesthesia team that you take tirzepatide before any procedure involving anesthesia or deep sedation.
