Who may qualify for tirzepatide for weight management?
Short answer
Tirzepatide for weight management may be appropriate for adults with obesity, or adults who are overweight and have a weight-related health condition. Meeting weight criteria does not guarantee a prescription. A licensed physician in your state reviews your health history, medicines, and risks before deciding whether treatment is appropriate.
For its weight-management use, Zepbound is generally prescribed to adults with a body mass index, or BMI, of 30 or higher. Adults with a BMI of 27 or higher may also qualify if they have a weight-related condition, such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes.
BMI is only one part of the review. A licensed physician in your state considers your medical history, current medicines, and treatment goals. Meeting a BMI cutoff does not mean tirzepatide is appropriate or that a prescription will be issued.
Tirzepatide should not be used by anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2, called MEN 2. A past serious allergic reaction to tirzepatide is also a reason not to use it.
Tell your physician about severe stomach-emptying problems, pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, kidney disease, and diabetic eye disease. Tirzepatide should not be used for weight loss during pregnancy. Discuss pregnancy plans and breastfeeding before treatment.
