Can I use tirzepatide during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?
Short answer
Tirzepatide should not be used for weight loss during pregnancy. If you become pregnant, stop weight-loss treatment and contact your prescribing physician promptly. Discuss plans for pregnancy before starting or continuing treatment. Breastfeeding requires an individual medical review because information about effects on a nursing infant remains limited.
Weight-loss treatment with tirzepatide should not be used during pregnancy. Weight loss offers no benefit during pregnancy and may harm the developing baby. If you become pregnant while taking tirzepatide for weight management, stop treatment and contact your prescribing physician promptly.
If you also have diabetes, contact your diabetes care team right away. Blood sugar management remains important during pregnancy, and you may need a different treatment plan. Do not stop other diabetes medicines without medical advice.
Tell your physician if you plan to become pregnant. They can help decide when to stop tirzepatide before you try to conceive. Do not assume the medicine leaves your body as soon as you miss an injection.
Tirzepatide may make oral hormonal birth control less effective. Use non-oral birth control or add a barrier method for four weeks after starting and four weeks after each dose increase. If you are breastfeeding, discuss the limited infant safety information and your treatment needs with your physician before using tirzepatide.
