Can I stop taking Performance anxiety tablets when I no longer need them?
Short answer
If you use Performance anxiety tablets only occasionally, there may be no regular schedule to stop. Still, ask your prescribing physician before changing treatment. Do not suddenly stop propranolol if you take it regularly, especially for a heart condition. Your physician will decide whether you need a gradual dose reduction.
An occasional as-needed prescription is different from daily propranolol treatment. If you only take a tablet before certain events, you may not have a scheduled dose on other days. Follow your prescribing physician’s instructions and the pharmacy label rather than creating your own stopping plan.
If you have started taking propranolol often or every day, speak with your physician before stopping. Sudden stopping after regular use can cause serious heart problems, especially in people with heart disease. Your physician may recommend lowering the dose over time. Do not use a taper schedule from someone else’s prescription.
Tell your physician why you want to stop, how often you actually take it, and whether you have side effects. This helps them decide what is safest. Seek urgent care for chest pain, fainting, or severe breathing trouble. If performance anxiety continues to affect your work, school, or daily life, ask about therapy or other care rather than restarting or changing the dose yourself.
