Sleep · FAQ
Can I stop Oral appliance therapy once my snoring improves?
Short answer
Do not stop Oral appliance therapy just because your snoring improves. Results vary, and quieter sleep does not prove that sleep apnea is gone. The device works only while worn. Ask your prescribing physician and dentist to review your treatment before stopping, and seek advice promptly if pain or damage prevents use.
Talk with your prescribing physician and dentist before stopping Oral appliance therapy. A change in snoring or daytime alertness does not prove that sleep apnea has resolved. Results vary. Your physician may need to review your symptoms, health changes, and sleep testing before deciding whether treatment is still needed.
The device is not a medicine, so there is no drug dose to taper. However, sleeping without it can leave your sleep apnea untreated. Do not assume that weight changes, a new sleep position, or feeling better means you no longer need care. Ask your team whether a repeat sleep test is appropriate.
If you want to stop because of discomfort, your dentist can check the fit and discuss options. Do not continue using a broken device or one that causes severe pain. Contact your care team promptly for a safe plan while it is being checked. If another treatment is needed, ask when to start it and what to use during the change. Avoid driving whenever you feel too sleepy to stay alert.
