Can finasteride be used with minoxidil or other hair-loss treatments?
Short answer
A physician may prescribe finasteride with minoxidil because they work in different ways. The combination may help some people manage hair loss, but results vary. Do not add treatments on your own. Your physician should review each product, its ingredients, and your health history before recommending a combination.
Finasteride lowers DHT, while minoxidil supports hair growth through a different process. A physician may recommend using both for male pattern hair loss. Some people may benefit from a combined plan, but results vary. Using several products does not guarantee more regrowth.
Tell your physician whether you use topical minoxidil, oral minoxidil, other prescription hair treatments, or supplements. Oral minoxidil is used off-label for hair loss and has separate risks, including effects on blood pressure and heart rate. It should not be added without a medical review.
Some compounded scalp products contain both finasteride and minoxidil. Compounded medications are prepared by a licensed pharmacy for one patient and are not FDA-approved. Check the ingredient list so you do not accidentally use the same active ingredient in more than one product.
Combining scalp products may increase irritation or change how you need to apply them. Ask your physician or pharmacist about timing, scalp care, and which symptoms should lead you to stop and seek advice.
