What side effects can finasteride cause?
Short answer
Finasteride can cause lower sex drive, trouble getting or keeping an erection, and changes in ejaculation. Mood changes and breast changes have also been reported. Topical products may irritate the scalp and can cause whole-body effects. Contact your physician about new symptoms; seek urgent help for a severe allergic reaction.
Possible side effects of finasteride include lower sex drive, erection problems, and changes in ejaculation or semen amount. Sexual symptoms that continued after stopping have been reported. The risk and cause of persistent symptoms are not fully understood. Discuss concerns with your physician before starting treatment.
Other reported effects include breast tenderness or enlargement, testicular pain, and mood changes. Report a breast lump, nipple discharge, or ongoing pain promptly. Compounded topical finasteride may cause scalp redness, burning, or itching. It can also enter the bloodstream and cause effects beyond the scalp.
If you develop depression or a marked change in mood, contact your prescriber promptly. Anyone in crisis can call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Call 911 if there is immediate danger.
Get emergency care for trouble breathing or swelling of the lips, tongue, face, or throat. For other new symptoms, ask your physician whether to pause or change treatment. Do not simply increase or decrease the dose yourself.
