Who may be eligible for finasteride for hair loss?
Short answer
Finasteride pills for hair loss are intended for adult men with male pattern hair loss. Finasteride is not appropriate during pregnancy and is not intended for children. A licensed physician in your state must review your symptoms, health history, and medicines before deciding whether to prescribe it.
Finasteride may be an option for adult men whose hair loss follows a male pattern, such as thinning on the top of the scalp. A licensed physician in your state decides whether treatment is appropriate. An online request does not guarantee a prescription.
Not all hair loss is caused by DHT. Illness, major stress, thyroid disease, low iron, scalp conditions, and some medicines can cause shedding. Your physician may recommend an in-person exam or testing if your symptoms suggest another cause. Photos and a clear timeline of your hair loss can help with the review.
Tell your physician about liver disease, prostate concerns, fertility plans, mood symptoms, and any past reaction to finasteride. Also share all prescription drugs, over-the-counter products, and supplements you use.
Finasteride is not intended for children. It must not be used during pregnancy because it can harm a developing male fetus. People who could become pregnant need specific medical guidance and should not start finasteride on their own.
