Can dutasteride interact with other medicines or affect a PSA test?
Short answer
Dutasteride can interact with some medicines, and oral dutasteride lowers PSA, a blood marker used in prostate care. The effect of a compounded topical on PSA is uncertain. Tell your physician about all medicines, supplements, and scalp products, and tell anyone ordering a PSA test that you use dutasteride.
Some medicines slow the body's breakdown of dutasteride and may increase exposure. Examples include certain medicines used for HIV and some antifungal drugs. The relevance to your topical prescription depends partly on how much is absorbed. Give your physician a full list of prescriptions, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and supplements so they can check your exact combination.
Also mention finasteride, oral dutasteride, oral or topical minoxidil, blood pressure medicines, and other scalp treatments. Do not combine hair loss products on your own. Using them together may increase side effect risks or make it harder to identify what caused a reaction. Scalp procedures can also change absorption.
Oral dutasteride lowers prostate-specific antigen, or PSA. This can affect how a clinician reads a PSA blood test. The effect of a compounded topical is uncertain, so tell anyone ordering or reviewing your test that you use it. Do not adjust or interpret the result yourself. Your clinician should consider your medication history and PSA trend.
