Who should check with a dentist before using chlorhexidine?
Short answer
Anyone considering prescription chlorhexidine needs a dental review. Do not use it if you have a known allergy to chlorhexidine or an ingredient in the product. Tell your dentist if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, treating a child, or unable to reliably spit out a rinse. Product ingredients and age limits differ.
A licensed dentist in your state decides whether prescription chlorhexidine is appropriate for you. Do not use it if you have a known chlorhexidine allergy. Tell the dentist about past reactions to antiseptic mouthwashes, skin cleaners, or medical products. Chlorhexidine appears in products beyond dental rinses, and a past reaction may be important.
Share whether you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding. Ask before using chlorhexidine for a child. Product labeling and age limits differ, and a person must be able to use a rinse without swallowing it. Never give a child someone else's prescription or use an adult dose without dental advice.
Some rinses contain alcohol or other ingredients that may matter for your health needs. Your dentist or pharmacist can review the full ingredient list. Also report mouth sores, recent dental surgery, severe gum pain, or trouble swallowing. These may change the treatment plan or require an in-person exam. Chlorhexidine made for skin cleaning must never be substituted for a dental product.
