How should I use a prescription chlorhexidine rinse or dental gel?
Short answer
Use chlorhexidine exactly as your dentist and pharmacy label direct. For a rinse, measure the prescribed amount, swish for the stated time, and spit it out. Do not swallow it. Gel instructions differ from rinse instructions. Ask your dentist or pharmacist if any part of the directions is unclear.
The right amount, timing, and length of treatment depend on your chlorhexidine product and dental needs. A licensed dentist in your state sets your treatment plan. Do not change the dose or use the medicine more often than prescribed. More is not necessarily better and may increase side effects.
For an oral rinse, use the measuring device that comes with the product or one recommended by your pharmacist. Swish for the time listed on the label, then spit it out. Do not dilute the rinse unless directed. Do not swallow it or use it as a regular drink. Many prescription rinses call for waiting at least 30 minutes before eating or drinking; check your label.
A dental gel may be placed only on a certain area. Do not use rinse directions for a gel. If you miss a dose, follow the label or ask your pharmacist. Do not double a dose to make up for one you missed. Keep the medicine away from children.
