Who may qualify for prescription medication for obesity and weight management?
Short answer
For adults, weight management medicines are often considered at a BMI of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher with a weight-related health condition. These thresholds do not guarantee eligibility. A licensed physician in your state reviews the specific medicine’s requirements, your health history, and possible risks.
Prescription weight management medicine may be considered for adults with obesity or for adults with overweight and a weight-related health problem. Common thresholds are a BMI of at least 30, or at least 27 with a condition such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes. Requirements can differ by medicine.
Meeting a BMI threshold does not automatically make medicine appropriate. A physician also reviews past treatment, current medicines, eating habits, and medical conditions. Pregnancy, plans for pregnancy, and breastfeeding are important to discuss. A history of an eating disorder or certain digestive problems may change the care plan.
At Verra, a licensed physician in your state makes the prescribing decision after an online or video visit. Some states or medicines require a video visit. The physician may need more information, lab work, or an in-person assessment before deciding. Be open about your goals and concerns, including any medicine you already use for diabetes or weight management.
